Lasting Powers of Attorney
Why You Need Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA)
An LPA gives trusted people legal authority to make decisions if you lose mental capacity through illness or accident.
Two types of LPA:
Health & Welfare: Medical care, daily routine, life-sustaining treatment
Property & Finance: Managing bank accounts, paying bills, selling property
Without LPAs:
Court of Protection appoints deputies - expensive and time-consuming
Family can't access your finances or make healthcare decisions
Medical staff make health choices without knowing your wishes
Banks freeze joint accounts
Register LPAs while you have mental capacity - they can't be created after you lose it. Like insurance - better to have and not need, than need and not have.
Time and cost savings now prevent stress and expense later.
